On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 3,886 Prime Sheep, comprising of 3,274 Prime Hoggs & 612 Cast Ewes & Rams.
Top price of the day was 292.0p/kg for a Texel Hogg from Mr J Winter, Clickham, bought by Mr Bob Vevers.
Top price per head was £123.00 for Texel Hoggs from Messrs AJ & FM Harrison, Grange Hall, bought by Mr A Slack.
Another outstanding show of both Hoggs and Ewes were presented, with an awesome average of 207.21p/kg for all stock under 47 kilos.
Cast Ewes and Rams were much dearer on the week, most notably was the plain Ewe trade.

On Tuesday Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime sheep & Cast sheep at Kirkby Stephen. 1,643 predominantly hill bred and horned hoggs were submitted to the usual large ringside of prospective purchasers.
All classes were good to sell with continental bred hoggs regularly making £2 per kilo whilst horned hoggs regularly made in excess of 175 per kilo.
Cast ewes & rams were also good to sell as a planner show was forward. Vendors left the ringside delighted with prices received.

On Tuesday, January 26 saw the local farming community Flock to support a charity Auction held at Kirkby Stephen Mart with over 90 lots of good and Livestock on offer, a packed ringside of potential purchasers realised a stunning £4,300 for Cancer Charities Macmillan Cancer Support and Rosemere Cancer Foundation.
A huge variety of items were donated from many local business and individuals ranging from sheep feed to power tool, half a pig to afternoon tea at Sharrow Bay. Top priced item was £150 for a beautiful Walking stick.
With the auction being held prior to the prime sheep sale over 30 vendors donated livestock towards the cause. Local farmer and organiser Alan Birbeck from Nateby was delighted at the number of donations and the amount raised, exceeding the £500 he was hoping to achieve.

A top quality show of cattle were put on offer to a large ringside of buyers at Kirkby Stephen mart on Monday which ensured a magnificent trade for all types of cattle from start to finish with the £1000 barrier being broken many times and over a third making in excess of £900.
Topping at £1250 was a fantastic Limousin heifer shown by Messrs Stevenson, Howgill Foot whose run of 20 great cattle averaged a mighty £1037.22.
In the pre sale show the overall champion was given to a superb British Blue Heifer consigned by Messrs Rukin, Park Lodge which later went on to realise £1120.

A wonderful show of Prime Hoggs averaged 196.42p/kg. Topping the trade was 284.87p/kg for a pen of five Beltex Hoggs from Mr MH Elliott, Espland House, purchased by Cranstons Quality Butchers.
Trade throughout was outstanding, with all types selling well to an active ring of 15 buyers. Again Penrith Bucked the National trend, ensuring sellers got their just rewards.

On Tuesday Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime sheep at Kirkby Stephen where an increased number of 1,970 sheep were forward saw a predominantly hill bred show of hoggs submitted to the usual excellent ringside of buyers. Well fleshed sorts fully maintained recent good rates whilst plainer sorts were cheaper on the week.
Topping at 233.80p/kilo were a pen of excellent Beltex hoggs consigned by Messrs Nelson, Rosgill Head.
A larger entry of 344 cast ewes and rams were again a very good trade being similar to recent weeks.

A good company of customers were present considering the wintry road conditions.
Round Bales of Wheat straw were £17 per bale.
Store Cattle were good to sell with bullocks averaging £709.52 and Heifers £664.85 an increase of £98.54 on the year

On Monday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their January Bonanza show and sale of 1,225 Store Cattle and Feeding Bulls, kindly sponsored by PFK Land Agency. A pre sale show was judged by Mr W Timms, Nr Goole, whom placed a fabulous Limousin Cross Heifer Champion from Mr D Mallinson, Lodge Farm. Reserve Honours went to the First Prize British Blue Heifer from Messrs E Wood, Waters Farm.
The sale prices were outstanding for all types of stock, with an excellent atmosphere created, and no fewer than 78 Cattle passing the £1,000 barrier, with the whole sale averaging £821.50, £6.00 up on the year. Top price of the day was £1,235 for a British Blue Bullock from Mr Cleasby, Countess Farm.

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 4,231 Prime Sheep, comprising of 3,420 Prime Hoggs & 811 Cast Ewes & Rams.
Trade was yet again outstanding for both sections, with lowland Hoggs all £2/kg and much more. Most pleasing was our Mule & Swaledale Hogg trade, with Mules regularly pulling 187-200p/kg and Swaledale Hoggs at 180-205p/kg.
Top price per kilo was 266.0p/kg for a Beltex Hogg presented by Messrs Bindloss, Shap Abbey, purchased by Mr A Slack.
Top price per head was £123.00 for a Texel Hogg from Mr D Baldry, Howtown Hotel, bought by Mr Gavin Little, Market Arcade.

On Tuesday Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime sheep at Kirkby Stephen where a huge ringside of 15 active buyers ensured all classes of sheep met with a phenomenal trade.
Topping at 254.60p per kilo were a pen of fantastic Beltex hoggs consigned by Messrs Marston, Easegill Head. Continental bred hoggs regularly broke the £90 barrier. Mule hoggs topped at £86.80 from Messrs Robinson, Low Farm Nateby to average £77.86 and Swaledale hoggs topped at £78.80 from Messrs Brownrigg, Lane Farm, Newbiggin On Lune.
Cast ewes were forward in great number and sold to the dearest trade ever seen with all vendors over the moon with their trade.

On Monday Harrison & Hetherington Ltd held their annual January show & sale of cattle. The adverse weather conditions nationally had a major effect on numbers present, however those who managed to get to the market were delighted with prices received.
The pre sale show was sponsored by I’ Anson and most ably judged by Paul Hodgson, Lincoln who awarded the championship to a superb Limousin Bullock consigned by Messrs G Sowerby, Terry’s Farm, Ormside and later selling for £1,110 to the judge.
Top quality cattle regularly sold for prices in excess of £1,000 whilst yearling Bullocks regularly exceeded £700. Heifers were also in demand as a strong contingent of purchasers looking for breeding cattle ensured the prices received were up on the year.
Cow also met with a keen enquiry as the 35 forward topped at 134.50p/kg for a Blonde D’Aquitaine from Mr R Balmer, Grassgill.

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 2,646 Prime Sheep, comprising of 2,316 Prime Hoggs & 330 Cast Ewes & Rams.
A smaller show of sheep were forward due to the weather. But those who managed to brave it had a fantastic trade for all types, with an amazing average of 206.4p/kg (£87.90/head).
Top price per head on the day was £121 for a pen of Beltex Hoggs, shown by Espland House, purchased by Robert Skelton, Dearham.
Cull Ewes met one of the dearest trades experienced at this centre to an overall average of £92.30, with a large ring of buyers present. More sheep are required to meet buying demand.

On Tuesday Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime sheep at Kirkby Stephen. Number were less due to the adverse weather conditions, however the 1,187 sheep forward met with a cracking trade, all purchasers were eager for sheep with many leaving disappointed unable to fulfil their orders. However all vendors left the ringside delighted as an overall average of 193p/kg (£75.41) was achieved.
Mule hoggs reached £88.80 to average £75.86 whilst Swaledale hoggs topped at £77.30 and averaged £65.10. Continental bred hoggs sold to £98.80 regularly making well in excess of 200p/kg.
Cast ewes were also in great demand being the dearest trade of the season so far.
