AS part of Writers’ in Focus week, international poet Simon Armitage came to Appleby to read extracts from his work.
The Sunday Times Author of the Year, holder of one of the first Forward Prizes and a Lannan Award winner, Simon is an established poet and author. His first novel, Little Green Man was published by Penguin in 2001 and his second novel The White Stuff in 2004.
He was invited by Appleby Grammar School to perform his work to an audience of students and public. Following the 45 minute reading there was a workshop for students at the school
Head teacher, Andrew Lund said: “It has been a great honour for the school to welcome Simon, and it was a great opportunity for local people to come and join students to hear his reading.
“Simon writes for radio, television and film and is the author of four stage plays, including Mister Heracles, a version of the Euripides play The Madness of Heracles. His recent dramatisation of The Odyssey, commissioned by the BBC, was broadcast on Radio 4 in 2004 and is available through BBC Worldwide.”
