Carlisle City v Penrith Over 35s match report

Submitted by admin on Tue, 06/15/2010 - 07:41

Penrith Over 35s travelled to The Sheepmount to take on current champions Carlisle City writes Kevin Clark.

Penrith took a strong squad and looked to consolidate their position in the top two while City who only lost three games last season had lost two already this season with 4-1 reversals at Grasslot and Carlisle Zimmers.

Penrith found themselves 1 down in the first minute when 3 players went for the same ball and the ball found Milburn who smashed an unstoppable volley past Nigel McCombie.

Five minutes later a long free kick found Bell at the back post who was totally unmarked and headed the ball across McCombie to increase City’s lead.

Penrith were disjointed and City seemed to create chances at will but some poor finishing let them down, after 25 minutes Penrith seemed to get a grip on the game and began to create some chances themselves, the visitors should have had a penalty when a blatant handball in the box was missed by the referee, however minutes later Penrith got back in the game with a controversial goal when Mark Lawson headed in from a corner when it seemed the home keeper was fouled.

2-1 at half time and the opening stages of the second half were all Penrith and they seemed the more likely to score, the away side were dominating possession but City rocked Penrith when on the hour mark City increased their lead when Willie Armstrong cut in from the left and fed Bell who had the simple task of finishing from close range.

Penrith had to open up to try and gain something from the game but all too often the wrong option was used and City played around the gaps that Penrith left, the fourth goal wasn’t long in coming when suicidal defending let Dobie head in from close range with 6 Penrith players within touching distance around him.

With 15 minutes remaining Dave Ryding crucially slipped and Bell made the most of it and after a fine save from McCombie netted the rebound to put City 5-1 up, it was Bell again who scored the 6th with yet another free header in the box to cement Penrith’s heaviest defeat in 3 seasons
